Position: Production Assistant at the Chesapeake Arts Center

Job Days: 9 month contract – 20 hrs. weekly

The Production Assistant provides comprehensive support for all events on CAC. Responsible for assisting and supporting all administrative activities of the rental, facilities and production departments.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supports Production Manager and production department during technical, dress rehearsals and previews as assigned.

• Provide supervision for load-ins and strikes as assigned

• Ability to work hands-on in an electrician capacity including comfort working at heights such as catwalks, ladders and lifts is a must.

• Position requires the following abilities: Hang, focus lighting instruments, program and operate the ETC EOS stage lighting consoles as needed.

• Working knowledge of Midas M32 and Behringer X32 sound boards.

• Basic knowledge of A/V systems

• Act as run crew for various technical aspect on the production during the run of the show.

• Perform general and preventative maintenance of technical equipment.

• Serve as Stage Manager for selected performance.

• Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, mornings and holiday shifts

Education and/or Equivalent Experience Preferred:

• 3 to 5 years professional theatre experience in production.

Other Skills, Ability and/or Knowledge:

• Software: Qlab, Power Point

• Ability to work very long hours as workflow increases and deadlines approach.

• Calm / Professional demeanor, sense of humor encouraged

• Working knowledge of professional theatre systems and personnel

• Familiarity with existing and emerging technologies and practices relevant to theatre and the entertainment industry

• Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of job assignments

• Ability to work independently on multiple projects and be a self-starter

• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

• Very solid interpersonal, motivational and organizational skills with very strong attention to detail.

• Excellent organizational skills for managing multiple tasks successfully.

• Ability to collaborate and work well within a team environment

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Invitation for Applications: Teaching Artists

Chesapeake Arts Center invites dynamic, experienced and creative Teaching Artists to apply for a 2018 residency at our Brooklyn Park, MD location. CAC seeks Teaching Artists that work in (but not limited to) the following disciplines:

  • Visual Arts – Mural, Painting, Air-Dry Clay Techniques, Collage, etc.
  • Digital Media – Animation, Photography, Website Design, etc.
  • Theatre – Puppetry, Playwriting, Devising, etc.
  • Vocal Music – Chorus, Musical Theatre, etc.
  • Instrumental Music – Beginning Instruments, African Drumming, Rock band, etc.
  • Dance – Hip Hop, Jazz/ contemporary, International/Folk genres, etc.
  • Literary – Storytelling, Graphic Novels, Poetry, etc.

Four Teaching Artists will be selected for residency for January-December 2018. Through our residencies, CAC provides and promotes quality arts education programs that:

  • Foster creativity and imagination
  • Expand verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Enhance capacities for critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Fortify social-emotional skills

 

Teaching Artist Responsibilities Include:

  • Designing and executing an age-appropriate, project-based arts curriculum. Programs will be scheduled during after-school and evening hours.
  • Preparing for and producing culminating presentations at assigned site(s).
  • Collaborating effectively with coworkers, and communicating regularly with supervisory staff.
  • Submitting complete lessons plans, timesheets, reports and other vital administrative documentation in a timely manner.

 

Criteria

CAC selects Teaching Artists who embody the following qualities:

  • Artistic Excellence, including quality and scope of professional artistic work, and depth of knowledge within an artistic discipline.
  • Engaging Teaching, especially incorporating the creative process, reaching students across diverse developmental levels, yielding quality student work, strong understanding of arts learning standards, and substantial experience in public school classrooms or working with urban youth, including strong classroom management skills.
  • Professionalism, including abilities to plan with others, to articulate goals and objectives, and to adapt to varying student populations and school environments.

Compensation

The CAC Resident Teaching Artist will be paid a monthly stipend in exchange for teaching up to four classes per week, on site at CAC or off-site at a local school. Additional benefits include personal studio and storage space at CAC and a CAC-sponsored performance or exhibit to be included in the 2018-2019 CAC season program.

Requirements:

  • Professional training in the vocal music field. Bachelor’s degree in Performance and/or Education is preferred.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

On Saturday, August 26, 2017, artist and musicians will join forces at the “Arts in the Park Festival” at the Chesapeake Arts Center located at 194 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park, Maryland 21225. Local artists will exhibit and offer their work for sale, while a festival of live music is presented from 11AM-3PM. The Chesapeake Arts Center is organizing the FREE event, under the leadership of the Executive Director Belinda Fraley Huesman and sponsors Whiting-Turner and Arundel Federal Bank.

The free outdoor festival will include live music, Corn Hole, Moon Bounce, local artist displaying and selling their art , Batman of Baltimore, dance performances , Food Trucks and entertainment for all ages!

The music component of the festival will combine the talents of local professional musicians, singer-songwriter Colin Rowe, and indie rock bands RÊVE and Leo & Cygnus.

The Arts in the Park Festival is a great opportunity to see work of local artists and to enjoy some good music. For the music part of the festival, feel free to bring a lawn chair or blanket. CALL FOR ARTISTS FOR THE ART OF SOUND EXHIBIT AT THE CHESAPEAKE ARTS CENTER

Chesapeake Arts Center will be presenting the “Art of Sound” exhibition with artist Tom Pearce at the Hal Gomer Gallery located at the Chesapeake Arts Center at 194 Hammonds Lane Brooklyn Park, Maryland 21060 from August 2-August 31, 2017. Proposal is reviewed by the Chesapeake Arts Center’s Gallery Coordinator and must be turned in by Friday, July 21, 2017. Closing Reception on August 31, 2017 from 6-8PM.

Theme of the Exhibit:  MUSIC

SIZE OF ARTWORK ALLOWED

11X17-20X24  Photography pieces MUST be framed in Black Wood OR Metal Frames only! Canvas will be accepted. Artists frame own artwork with wire on the back.

How many can you submit? Artists can submit up to 5 pieces. Artwork will be selected by the Chesapeake Arts Center’s Gallery Coordinator. Only 15 pieces will be selected for this exhibit.

EACH PROPOSAL MUST BE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

The work should be no more than five years old, no nudity, violence or foul language allowed.

Chesapeake Arts Center Keeps Youth Learning and Creating this Summer

The Chesapeake Arts Center will be offering camp programs to give kids and teens an adventurous and creative summer.  CAC camp programs offer youth fun and unique experiences with an opportunity to explore, meet new friends, discover new interests and create memories that last a lifetime.

With more free time in summer, and parents having to work, the Chesapeake Arts Center provides a safe and fun learning spot for your children.  The CAC encourages parents to help their kids unplug from technology and explore all the CAC summer programs and classes the center has to offer.

“Chesapeake Arts Center has high quality, enjoyable educational programs that lay the foundation for lifelong learning. This summer we have a myriad of camp opportunities for your child that will give him or her glimpse into a world where dreams are born and lives are changed. “says Belinda Fraley Huesman, Chesapeake Arts Center’s Executive Director.

These are the six camps the Chesapeake Arts Center has to offer in summer 2017:

  1. Art and Animals – Maryland | Ages 6-12 | July 10-14, 2017: Five days of art and animals! Each day, students will learn about local wildlife, including visits from real animal ambassadors! Students will then take their observations and create their own unique artwork representing the animals. Students will draw and paint every day! Camp culminates on Friday with a gallery presentation of the students’ artwork for friends and family. Click HERE to register.
  2. Musical Theatre Camp | Ages 6-15 | July 17- 28, 2017: The camp centers on the creation of a full-scale revue of musical numbers from great Broadway shows. Divided by age into small groups, the children take classes in acting, singing, dancing, costumes and stagecraft, taught by a staff of musical theatre professionals. Over two weeks, students learn their songs, rehearse their scenes, make their costumes and build the set. On the final day, they present a free performance of their show for parents, relatives and friends.Click HERE to register.
  3. Art and Animals – Global | Ages 6-12 | July 31- August 4: Did you love Art and Animals week one? Come back for a second week where kids will learn about animals around the world. Live animal ambassadors will visit each day. Students’ daily artwork will reflect artistic styles from many countries. At the end of the camp, join us for a gallery presentation of student pieces! Magic, Muggles, and the “Mirror of Meetse| Ages 6-12 | August 7-11: 5 days of theatre camp from Erase Hate Through Art, culminating in a Friday afternoon performance of “The Mirror of Meetse” (open to friends and family). Campers will spend time each day in Charms, Potions, Herbology, and more! Daily activities include arts and crafts, recreational activities (quidditch!) and rehearsal time. Camp is based on the world of Harry Potter by JK Rowling, and centers around a strong anti-bullying theme.Click HERE to register
  5. Enchanted Daydreams: Dance and Drama | Ages: 6-12 | August 14-18 : Enter the fantastic world of fairies! Every day during the Enchanted Daydreams camp, we will use our imaginations to create fairy stories and crafts. Students will spend time each day in our dance studio, learning creative movement techniques and dance combinations. Wings and wands are a must, and will be included for each camper. Creature Colors  | Ages: 3-5 | August 14-18: For the younger kids who may not be ready for a full camp experience, join Echoes of Nature this week to learn all about different colors and textures found in nature.
