Chesapeake Arts Center Announces 2016-2017 Performing Arts Season

The Chesapeake Arts Center announces its 2016–2017 performing arts season, featuring theater, comedy, inspiring speakers, and music artists.  The Chesapeake Arts Center is a 58,000 sq ft. multi-disciplinary art center located at 194 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park, Maryland 21225. Our facility houses a 752-seat Hammonds Lane Theatre, a 120-seat Studio 194 Theatre, gallery space, makers-space, dance studios, ceramics lab, music room, and classrooms. The 2016-17 season, will bring 30+ talented local and national known artists to your community art center.

The season will kick off with a new series, “In the Studio with…Arts Empowered Minds Initiative” on Tuesday, September 9, 2016 at 6pm in Studio 194 theatre. What is In the Studio? Chesapeake Arts Center will use the arts to excite, educate, engage, inspire and grow this community’s people.  Our In the Studio series aims to bring informative and inspiring guest speakers who work on behalf of this community through their work as an artist, educator or community leader.

Young Audiences, the nation’s largest arts education network, began in Baltimore in 1950. As the Maryland affiliate, we are a nonprofit organization devoted to enriching the lives and education of Maryland’s youth through educational and culturally-diverse arts programs. We partner with professional artists from all disciplines and with schools throughout Maryland for hands-on arts learning experiences. We envision a Maryland where the arts are valued for their capacity to transform lives, and where every student is immersed in opportunities to imagine, create, and realize their full potential through the arts. On Saturday, October 1, 2016, the National Players presents The Giver at 10:30am and Hamlet at 8:00pm. The Chesapeake Arts Center will also be hosting a special VIP reception honoring CAC founder Joan Cadden before the performance of Hamlet at 5:30pm.  During the VIP reception, enjoy congenial speakers, appetizers, drinks, as well as an exclusive viewing of the production’s fight call. Tickets are $10.00 for regular tickets and $50.00 for the VIP reception plus the performance of Hamlet.

Baltimore Rock Opera Society presents “The Brides of Tortuga”  on October 28, 29, November 4, 5, 11th a 12th, 2016 in the Hammonds Lane Theatre at 8pm. “The Brides of Tortuga” is the eighth original production written and produced by the Baltimore Rock Opera Society. This violent, raucous, rebellious rock ‘n roll musical begins in 1661 in Calais, France, and crosses the vast Atlantic Ocean before coming to a bloody close in the Caribbean Sea. The show features a large cast of female leads, epic sets, intensive fight choreography and powerful vocal ensemble-combined with a live rock band/orchestra. “Brides of Tortuga” creates a powerful statement about rage, self-determination, friendship..and kicking butt on a boat. Tickets $20.00.

In the Hal Gomer Gallery, the CAC will be hosting the “Chesapeake Bay-Endangered Landscape Photography” exhibit from November 1- November 30 with a special “Meet the Artist” reception on Friday, November 11, 2016 from 6-8pm. Six talented local photographers (Geoff Lawrence, Lee Goodwin, Sean Simmons, Keith Burke, Donna Johnson & Ken Marks) will highlight difference images around the Chesapeake Bay. Free Admission. Gallery is open to the public from Monday-Friday; 10:00am-6:00pm. Free Admission!

Rock out with local bands in Chesapeake Arts Center’s 3rd annual “Be the Band” competition! Top 7 bands will compete in the Studio 194 Theatre on Saturday, October 8 at 4:30pm. Final top 3 bands will compete for the grand prize of $1K grand prize + 20 hours of professional studio time at Konexion recording studio on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 7:30pm.Tickets $10 each performance. Get ready to laugh! Comedian Spencer Humm returns to the CAC this Holiday season for the famous Christmas Special… “The Comedy Nutcracker” on December 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18th, 2016. Friday & Saturday shows will be at 8pm and Sunday Shows at 3pm in the Studio 194 Theatre.  Baltimore’s most popular Christmas comedy event celebrates its fourteenth season of holiday fun. Join comedian Spencer “Slash” Humm on a magical journey of outrageous comedy, music, and yuletide merriment. The one-of-a kind production has become known for its juggling, magic, standup comedy, musical theatre, and more. Tickets $35-55.

Looking further ahead, on January 20th & 21st, 2017, Playwright and Director, David White will be presenting “The Raven and the Writing Desk” in celebration of Edgar Allen Poe’s birthday, a theatrical reading of stories and poems by Poe adapted and presented by Baltimore-area theatre artists in the Studio 194 Theatre. Tickets $10.00

February 10, OUR WORLD is an engaging spoken word piece addressing the need to end the plague of hate, stereotypes, and other prejudices by coming together as a community and as a human race. By addressing societal trends and accountability, the performance calls attention to the danger of our own thoughts and actions and encourages a collaboration of individuals which will, in turn, inspire a new world of hope.8pm in Studio 194 Theatre. Tickets $5.00

On February 18, join us for the “Emancipation Proclamation” event at 1PM in the Hammonds Lane Theatre. A lively account of the significant events and personalities that bring to life the history of African Americans and their struggle for equality through stories and song.  Tickets $5.00

Tuesday, May 9, 2017, CAC presents “In the Studio with…Combat Heroin” at 6pm in Studio 194 Theatre. COMBAT HEROIN is a devised theatre piece created in response to Governor Hogan and LT.Governor Rutherford’s Heroin and Opioid Emergency Task Force. Through the use of central metaphor, it addresses the epidemic in our state and provides insight for those experiencing struggle, victory, and everything in between. Free Admission!

Also, SAVE THE DATE for the 4th Annual Arts in the Park festival on August 28, 2017 from 11am-3pm in front of Hammonds Lane Theatre outside.  A family-friendly festival of art, music, dance, theatre, and food! Activities for kids of all ages, and lots of wonderful art vendors. Free Admission!
